Groom was hired to handle all phases of Preconstruction and has completed Phase 1, Building 1.
In 2021, Plummer Youth Promise, Inc. completed a three-building Master Plan in collaboration with Roundel 47, the project architect. The master plan outlines a campus that includes a cluster of new residential buildings (Building 1), a historic preservation project (Building 2), and a future Campus Center (Building 3), which will follow the renovation of an existing interim building that has already been completed.
Building 1 involves the construction of a new 18,049-square-foot residential facility that houses two independent residential programs, along with shared clinical, office, and family meeting spaces. The building features single-occupancy restrooms, allowing youth to use facilities and shower privately; single bedrooms where they can study, connect with friends and family, and rest without disruption; and a layout that separates bedrooms and living areas from administrative offices to promote comfort and independence.
Building 2 includes a comprehensive renovation of the existing 15,866-square-foot building, which dates back to the late 1860s and was originally part of the Plummer Farm School for Boys campus on Winter Island. The renovated facility will include apartment-style kitchens and appliances, enabling youth to cook and do laundry in a comfortable and welcoming environment. It will also provide ample personal storage, ensuring that youth can safely keep their belongings without concern about them being misplaced or mixed with others’.
Building 3 will consist of a new 5,550-square-foot campus center and a 1,340-square-foot residence designed for family visits. The center will include indoor spaces that foster culturally competent and welcoming family gatherings, as well as a fully appointed family-visiting apartment where families can stay overnight and prepare meals together, strengthening connections and creating a sense of home.
