DESIGN: Catlin Architecture

Groom Construction was contracted to build the new Beech Street Center in Belmont, Massachusetts. This environmentally-friendly 19,000 square foot public senior center was the first LEED-certified public building in Belmont. The project achieved its prestigious rating through extensive use of energy-saving strategies and environmentally sensitive materials.

Features include:

  • Geothermal heating and cooling system
  • Construction on the site of a former building
  • Recycling of construction waste
  • Floors made from easily renewable cork, bamboo, linseed-based linoleum, and recycled tires
  • Passive solar heat from large south-facing windows
  • Energy Star-rated fixtures and energy-efficient lighting
  • Low- and/or no-VOC (volatile organic compounds) materials
  • Native plants that require minimal watering
  • Bike racks and reserved parking for compact cars, hybrids, and car-poolers
